The mission of the First Presbyterian Church

is to make disciples for Jesus Christ, to share the Gospel, and to equip the Saints for the work of the church.

Canisteo First
Presbyterian Church

Welcome friends, neighbors, visitors,  curious folk and those who already know us.  You are all welcome as Christ would welcome you.  We are a very accepting, open and inclusive congregation.  Many of us come from different denominations, even different towns,  and we have all found a home here.  We are all part of the family of God.  We hope you enjoy being part of our church family too.

Because we are the oldest Christian community in Canisteo, founded in 1852, our church looks very traditional.   But our interests and activities are very much today!  Look around our website.  Even better come and visit us on Sunday.  Church is at 11:00 AM except in the summer when it starts at 10:00 AM.   We are an active force in our Community and are still growing and offering important services.

The Norman Harvey Endowment Fund

Norman Harvey, a native of Canisteo, who, although he went on to do many great things, never forgot his roots or the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo.  He was a graduate of Syracuse University Law School and practiced locally for a time.  Mr. Harvey also served in the USAF.  In 1949, he was mayor of Canisteo.  He left Canisteo to become a partner in a law firm in Plattsburg but never forgot his roots with our town.  After that in 1984, Mr. Harvey was appointed to the Appelate Division of the NYS Supreme Court. He often visited Canisteo over the years and eventually retired here.  Upon his death, an Endowment Fund was given to the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo for the purpose of the funds being used to support the community for the greater good.

These funds now support such local groups as Faith in Action, a group dedicated to helping senior citizens, the Canisteo Valley Youth Center housed here in Somers Hall, recently funds were given to help replant the Living Sign here, scholarships totaling $10,000 are given yearly and many groups that build and support the community receive assistance from the Endowment Mission Fund.

On July 24, recipients of the Norman Harvey Scholarship were recognized during the worship service. From left to right are Jacob Brown, Kristin Amidon, Laura Simons, Pastor Don Peek and Committee Chairperson Marilyn Fish. Following worship, a reception to honor them was held. All graduated in June from Canisteo-Greenwood Central School in the top third of their class.  The Norman Harvey Scholarship Fund was established by the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo to honor him by continuing his support of the community.

Jacob will be attending the University of Buffalo to study Political Science, Kristen will be studying at Nazareth College for Physical Therapy and Laura will also attend the University of Buffalo for Occupational Therapy. Derek Stryker also was a recipient but was unable to attend.
